About

About me

I was raised a Christian and was homeschooled from kindergarten through high school. I’ve been involved with several church traditions, including Reformed, Presbyterian, Baptist, Lutheran, and Assemblies of God. I am a software developer, married and have 3 children. I’ve been married for over 19 years to my wonderful wife and enjoy science, politics, and thinking about the ways that faith informs them. C.S. Lewis is an inspiration to me. I love the way he brings common sense, humor, and a practical perspective to Christianity – especially in his book “Merely Christian”, which is the inspiration for my blog’s title. While growing up I was taught to be angry when people abbreviated ‘Christmas’ as ‘Xmas’ – it was alleged that ‘some people’ wanted to take ‘Christ’ out of ‘Christmas’. I later learned that ‘χ‘ is the Greek symbol ‘Chi’, which has been used in history as an abbreviation for Christ. This was my first clue or lesson that there are some in Christian culture who like to invent issues where there are none.
